Blackletter is an ornate typeface style which was widely used in Western
Europe in the 12th through the 17th century. Sometimes the ancient style is still used for
newspapers and books. Other names for this style are Old
English, Fraktur, Gothic script, Textura and Gothic minuscule.
Blackletter can be hard
to read. There are very few curves, and many points.
It
is ironic that Blackletter, which was the typeface used for the Gutenberg Bible, was
later adopted by—and then rejected by—the Nazis. It has also been popular with
bikers and heavy metal rockers.
