It's now a 3-way fight. Target joins price war with Amazon & Walmart

Monday I wrote about the escalating price war between and with prices of popular books dropping to $9 or less.

Later on Monday, Target announced that they would accept pre-orders on for assumed bestsellers at $8.99, with free shipping.

The $8.99 price applies to select books, including:
“Breathless” by Dean Koontz
“Ford County” by John Grisham
“I, Alex Cross” by James Patterson
“Ice” by Linda Howard
“Kindred in Death” by J.D. Robb
“Pirate Latitudes” by Michael Crichton
“Under the Dome” by Stephen King

The $8.99 price for printed books is a buck less than the price of bestsellers sold as eBooks.

Meanwhile, Walmart has dropped some prices another penny, to $8.98, including the King book which has a $35 cover price.

If this continues, books will be free, but there won't be any bookstores left to sell them.

  1. The Stephen King book is selling for $35, too. I think that's a big mistake.

Someone is going to buy the book and scan that sucker into OCR software and sell bootlegs.
