My Independence Day

Today is Independence Day in the U.S. of A. It's the day that Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence from England back in 1776.

Despite independence, we really have interdependence -- in a great many ways. There's also rivalry.

Slang and idioms flow across the Big Pond in both directions.

On this American Independence Day I hereby declare that I detest "spot on" and I absolutely refuse to say it or write it.

However, I recently learned "chuffed" and I like it a lot. I will do my best to spread it around the colonies.

But I will never forgive the Brits for destroying the original Library of Congress when they burned Washington D. C. in August, 1814.
